The actor talks about the emergence of game game titles becoming an talent and not able to interactive entertainment in this particular exclusive interview. PHOTOS: 10 Broadcast and Cable Tv Show Most Seen By Males The Hollywood Reporter: Why did you decide to host this year's VGAs? Zachary Levi: If only to pay for homage and tribute to all or any the designers and gaming businesses that have ongoing to mold my own, personal existence and my entertainment. THR: What role will stars take part in the VGAs this year? Levi: Personally, i do not wish it to be an honours show where it's almost putting stars inside for celebrities' sake. I'm wanting the stars that we get are individuals who've some form of legitimate love or participation in the world of gaming, after i do. That's no less than where I recieve on it. "It might ultimately have a very resonance together with fat loss that the couple of of the several other, I suppose, exclusive honours shows have recently. In . THR: Can you believe the VGAs may ultimately become for games just what the Academy awards or Emmys are for film and television? Levi: For me once the VGAs keep doing through the gaming community, be consistent with it, concentrate on gamers, and possess that awesome, fun, atmosphere, but respect for your genre itself, they'll just still gain respect becoming an honours show. It might ultimately have a very resonance together with fat loss that the couple of of the several other, I suppose, exclusive honours shows have recently. THR: How will you start to see the VGAs evaluating along with other honours shows you've been connected with? Levi: A number of it's just patting each other round the back, no matter the marketplace is, whether it is the Emmys, the Oscars, or perhaps the Gaming Honours. In my opinion most likely probably the most important things is always that it's entertaining, fun, and pays tribute to people that have been ongoing to steer the charge in whatever that medium is. THR: How possibly you've seen the value of story evolve in gaming today? Levi: Getting a great narrative is important because games have grown to be many a great deal a lot more like these interactive movies that you just spend plenty of your time and energy with. In my opinion the Uncharted games did an incredible job only at that. The males at Naughty Dog have just ongoing to produce a fantastic title. Clearly, Infinity Ward and Treyarch are constantly coming back and forth and becoming us a pleasurable experience inside their first-person world with Cod games. And Bethesda (Softworks) is constantly within the ante while using Elder Scrolls games like Oblivion as well as the new Skyrim. THR: As you are overall Chuck, what's next to suit your needs? Levi: As somebody who works in entertainment which is an passionate gamer, I have got a lot of ideas. I really wish to start to make and bridging the area between gaming entertainment and live action entertainment. If only to start to make interactive shows where you stand watching stars like myself portray figures that, as we enter into fight, you might be motivated with the idea to opt-out or opt-straight into adjusting the outcomes of this fight...much like a choose your adventure. This is when I start to see the future going. The higher interactive you possibly can make entertainment, in addition to supplying individuals with options of passive or active entertainment, the higher. I like what Kinect does. You don't need a handheld handheld remote control any more. You can voice command or wave both hands around and be capable of take advantage of whenever and wherever you need. It's fascinating. THR: Gamers are actually streaming content in record amounts online. How will you realize that affecting not able to television? Levi: For any very long time now, my philosophy remains the television are a factor for that monitor. It won't be considered something, always, any more. Everything will you have to be blocked in, as you'll probably be streaming everything. It will open and very broaden the area of entertainment for independent entertainment producers to be capable of essentially make whatever they wish to make and then sell it right to their number of fans, that will most likely be incredible. If they're making something that's good, individuals will think it is watching it. THR: Simply what does this imply for your current prime time television model? Levi: Television will persist inside the model that individuals notice, but progressively more it is a lot more about sporting occasions and reality competitions items that people have to check out live. Becoming an internet marketer, growing amounts of individuals are DVRing their programming or watching it on the web, you aren't receiving your hard gained money in the advertisement investment, so it will affect the model drastically. Executives at OWN think they may have found a way to salvage Oprah Winfrey's struggling network: By catering more to an African-American audience. That may help ratings, but it would mean a dramatic shift, and one that could put the channel at odds with Winfrey's own brand.our editor recommendsSuze Orman's OWN Series Gets a Premiere DateDiscovery Communications CEO David Zaslav Urges Patience For OWN LaunchAnne Sweeney Tops THR's 2011 Women in Entertainment Power 100 ListGayle King Addresses Oprah Winfrey's Letter to Wendy Williams: Not Real PHOTOS: Hollywood's Top Earners According to OWN president Erik Logan and Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav, the silver lining in an otherwise bleak performance record for the network since its launch last January is that it's performing particularly well among its African-Americans audience members-especially with a reality show called Sweetie Pies that premiered in October. "Anytime you have a program that pops like Sweetie Pies did, you start looking at what drove it," Logan tells Adweek. "And we saw that the African-American audience really had a connection with that show. . . . We're going to look at ways to nurture and grow that." OWN has an average prime-time viewership of around 216,000 people, but Sweetie Pies enjoys an average audience of around 418,000, making it the highest rated show on the network by far. VIDEO: The 5 Best Clips From 'The Oprah Winfrey Show 'According to Logan, OWN executives will be taking the success of Sweetie Pies in that market into consideration when making future programming decisions, as well as trying to pitch OWN's success with African Americans to new advertisers. "We now have a new opportunity to tell the story to different advertisers that didn't think about buying OWN if you're trying to market your clients in an African-American marketplace," Logan said. "Our ad sales team now has the ability to open up those conversations." Discovery Communications launched OWN last January to much fanfare, but the network has been flagging since. In the face of dismal ratings, OWN ousted CEO Christina Norman, a veteran of MTV, in May, and installed Winfrey in her place in July. Discovery has also pumped millions into the network-around $254 million as of September-using that money to fund big-budget shows like Dr. Oz, with Oprah Winfrey Show alumnus Mehmet Oz, and Rosie O'Donnell's The Rosie Show. PHOTOS: Oprah Through the Years If indeed OWN does begin programming around the relative success of Sweetie Pies and catering to the African-American audience more specifically, it would be a dramatic departure from the formula for Winfrey's success, which she built with a wide, diverse fan base. "Oprah is a brand that goes far beyond the African-American market" said Tuna Amobi, senior media and entertainment analyst in Standard & Poor's U.S. Equity Research Services. "I don't know that it would be a good thing for OWN to so narrowly define its target." As he pointed out, the biggest potential pitfall for OWN would be that its advertising base could shrink. "The advertisers they would attract are different," he said. "It will be a narrower base." OWN's Logan insists the network is not embarking on a large-scale refocusing. "We're not going to sell out and just chase one demographic or segment," he said. "We're going to nurture the success we had with Sweetie Pies. . . . [But] it is our job to strike a balance. The Oprah brand is not niche. The Oprah brand is very broad. How we translate that to the screen is the challenge we have."
